29 April 1690: During a council of war convened at Coulnakyle, Major-General Thomas Buchan resolved that the Jacobite army would establish its encampment on the exposed terrain at Cromdale, which provided a view of the fords on the River Spey. Buchan dismissed concerns from his officers, and the Jacobites proceeded to Cromdale to set up camp, thereby exposing themselves to the risk of an unexpected cavalry attack by Scottish government forces.
29 April 1746: The Admiralty issued orders to Commodore Thomas Smith stationed in Leith Roads, instructing him to prepare transport ships for the embarkation of the hired Hessian troops in Scotland under Prince Frederick of Hesse and to provide a convoy for their voyage to Hellevoetsluis or Willemstad.
